Following the American Dream
"No one can serve two
masters; for either he will hate the
one and love the other, or he will hold to one and despise the other.
You cannot serve God
and riches." (Matthew 6:24)
"And the one on whom seed
was sown among the thorns, this is
the man who hears the word, and the worry of the world, and the
deceitfulness of riches
choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful" (Matthew 13:22)
And behold, one came to Him and said,
"Teacher, what good thing shall
I do that I may obtain eternal life?"
And He said to him, "Why are you
asking Me about what is good?
There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep
the
commandments."
He *said to Him, "Which ones?"
And Jesus said,"YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT
MURDER; YOU SHALL NOT
COMMIT ADULTERY; YOU SHALL NOT STEAL; YOU SHALL NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS;
HONOR YOUR FATHER
AND MOTHER; and YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF. "
The young man *said to Him, "All these things I have kept; what am I
still
lacking?"
Jesus said to him, "If you wish to
be complete, go and sell
your possessions and give to the poor, and you shall have treasure in
heaven; and come,
follow Me."
But when the young man heard this statement, he went away grieved; for
he was one who
owned much property.
And Jesus said to His disciples, "Truly I say to you, it is
hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. And again
I say to you, it is
easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich
man to enter the
kingdom of God." (Matthew 19:16-24)
And turning His gaze on His disciples, He
[Jesus] began to say,
"Blessed are you who are poor, for
yours is the kingdom of God.
"Blessed are you who hunger now, for you shall be satisfied. Blessed
are you who weep
now, for you shall laugh.
"Blessed are you when men hate you, and ostracize you, and cast insults
at you, and
spurn your name as evil, for the sake of the Son of Man. Be glad in
that day, and leap for
joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for in the same way
their fathers used to
treat the prophets.
"But woe to you who are rich, for you are receiving your comfort in
full.
"Woe to you who are well-fed now, for you shall be hungry. Woe to you
who laugh now,
for you shall mourn and weep.
"Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for in the same way their
fathers used to
treat the false prophets. (Luke 6:20-26)
And He said to them, "Beware, and be on your
guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an
abundance does his life
consist of his possessions." (Luke 12:15)
"So
therefore, no one of you can be My disciple
who does not give up all his own possessions." (Luke 14:33)
But godliness actually is a means of great
gain, when accompanied by
contentment. For we have brought nothing into the world, so
we cannot take anything
out of it either. And if we have food and covering, with these we shall
be content.
But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and
many foolish and
harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the
love of money is a
root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered
away from the faith,
and pierced themselves with many a pang. But flee from these things,
you man of God; and
pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and
gentleness. Fight the good
fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called,
and you made the
good confession in the presence of many witnesses. (1Timothy 6:6-12)
Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your
miseries which are coming upon
you. Your riches have rotted and your garments have become moth-eaten.
Your gold and your
silver have rusted; and their rust will be a witness against you and
will consume your
flesh like fire. It is in the last days that you have stored up your
treasure! Behold, the
pay of the laborers who mowed your fields, and which has been withheld
by you, cries out
against you; and the outcry of those who did the harvesting has reached
the ears of the
Lord of Sabaoth. You have lived luxuriously on the earth and led a life
of wanton
pleasure; you have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. You have
condemned and put
to death the righteous man; he does not resist you. (James 5:1-6)
'I know
your deeds, that you are neither cold nor
hot; I would that you were cold or hot. So because you are lukewarm,
and neither hot nor
cold, I will spit you out of My mouth. Because you say, "I am rich, and
have become
wealthy, and have need of nothing," and you do not know that you are
wretched and
miserable and poor and blind and naked, (Revelation
3:15-17)
Do not love the world, nor the things in
the world. If anyone loves the
world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the
world, the lust of the
flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not
from the Father, but
is from the world.
(1 John 2:15,16)
You cannot pursue the American Dream and
follow Jesus!
Those who follow after the American Dream
follow a broad and well traveled
road which ends in the lake of fire.
